Pro City Kenner Qtrs, Friday

August 6, 2016 - The quarterfinal round of this year’s Nike DC Pro City Kenner League concluded yesterday at Georgetown’s McDonough Arena. For Part 1, click here.

Following are game recaps and player reports.

Hoop Magic 84 Higher Level 76

Hoop Magic jumped out to a strong double digit lead, only to see Higher Level chip away at it, through defense, easy buckets and bad Hoop Magic time/situation management. Ultimately the victors salted the game away.

Andre Fox scored 24 points for Higher Level, while teammate Bryon Allen finished with 12 points for the league’s fifth slotted team. Reggie Cameron also finished with 12 points.

Isaac Copeland finished with 24 points for number four Hoop Magic. Jonathan Mulmore logged 18 points and Pops Mensah-Bonsu manned the boards while chipping in 14 points.

Players:

Bryon Allen – Higher Level, 6’3”, 202 pound guard, international pro – Having played at Roseto (Italy, Series A2) last year and played with the NBA’s Philadelphia 76’ers summer league team this summer, two things were clear of Allen; he’s altered his body and still is an offensive talent.

“I’ve trimmed down” said the George Mason graduate, work that has included “lifting a lot”. The result is slightly less of a scale reading, but more trim and explosiveness. It translates to the ability to attack with both hands via greater burst, and playing above the rim.

Scoring the ball has never been an issue for Allen, who can drop it in from all levels.

Andre Fox – 6’3”, 185 pound sophomore guard, High Point – Stronger and more explosive than his days at Eleanor Roosevelt (MD), Fox is still a guy that gets buckets driving and shooting. Is competitive and goes hard.

Had a solid frosh season at High Point, and if he becomes more of a dead eye shooter and masters a floater, Fox could be a Big South Conference force.

Reggie Cameron – Higher Level, 6’8”, 215 pound senior forward, Georgetown – Shot well, including after movement…(Premium Court).

Jonathan Mulmore – Hoop Magic, 6’3”, 175 pound junior guard, Georgetown – Drove well right and left, and is finding teammates better. International pro Bryon Allen said of him…(Premium Court)

Isaac Copeland – Hoop Magic, 6’9”, 215 pound junior forward, Georgetown – Has been fairly consistent in Pro City Kenner action, where he both pulls up and gets to the rim...(Premium Court).

On Point 78 McClinton All Stars 68

After being outscored 35-30 in the first half, On Point equalized the score before going on a run that produced a 16 point lead, ending with around 10 minutes left in the period. How? By rebounding, defending and scoring easy baskets.

Tyler Cavanaugh led On Point’s charge with 22 points, aided in large measure by Tre Kelley’s 13 points. Kent Auslander scored most of 13 points in the second half.

McClinton made its own run, culminating in a mere three point deficit after Kam Taylor’s steal and layup with 2:40 in regulation. Their near-comeback was fueled in large measure by full court defensive pressure.

Players:

Tre Kelley – On Point, 6’0”, 170 pound guard, international pro – Was on the controls, as usual. Drove, found and scored. Led On Point’s offensive attack.

Tyler Cavanaugh, On Point, 6’8”, 240 pound senior forward, GW – Is proving himself a standout frontcourt performer, one that bangs, rebounds, posts and shoots. Consider him a force. Works hard on the court. Has put in face up attack work.

Given he’s an at-the-rim guy, more Vertimax work can help his vertical. With that continued weight training should be on tap.

Paul White - On Point, 6’8”, 215 pound junior forward, Georgetown – Scored four points, but seems to be improving…(Premium Court)

Lasan Kromah – On Point, 6’4”, 205 pound guard, International Pro – Another Eleanor Roosevelt (MD) graduate, Kromah provided eight, timely points. Can back down smaller guards and go around bigs.

Played in Greece and Turkey last year. Is exploring options in Spain, Italy and Greece this time around.

Needs to become a better finisher, including developing a floater.

Kent Auslander – On Point, 6’6”, 215 pound sophomore forward, Maryland – Mostly scoring by slashing, Auslander also provided energy and even pulled a key late game charge. Competed.

His handle needs to be tightened, particularly when guarded closely.

Nate Britt – McClinton All Stars, 6’2”, 170 pound senior point guard, UNC – Scored eight points, while also finding teammates regularly. Was on the controls.

Must continue his strength training.

Anthony Cowan – McClinton All Stars, 5’10”, 160 pound freshman point guard, Maryland – Cowan logged 15 points, mostly triggered by his ability to get by defenders. Is learning to pick his spots and primarily find teammates.

Has to become stronger and a more focused, consistent defender.
