DC Pro City Qtrs – Thursday Pt. 1

August 5, 2016 - Two games, two close finishes occurred during Nike DC Pro City Kenner League quarterfinal play yesterday. The crowd in attendance at G’Town’s McDonough Arena were treated to good hoops!

Following are game and player reports. Expanded blurbs on Hoyas are available on Premium Court.

Tombs 95 A Wash 85

Tombs took the lead for good with 13:30 to go, grasping a slim 70-68 advantage over A Wash. The Pro City Kenner League playoff’s first seated team steadily pulled ahead over its 8th slotted crew.

A Blue and Grey triumvirate led Tombs: Former G'Town player D’Vauntes Smith-Rivera dropped 25 points and was particularly hot early on, sinking multiple jumpers. G’Town forward Marcus Derrickson (22 points) picked up his presence after halftime, while also hitting jumpers throughout. His current Hoya teammate, Rod Pryor was productive throughout, leading all scorers with 32 points.

A Wash got 14 points from Marcus Thornton, while two Hoyas – Tre Campbell and Kaleb Johnson – each contributed 13 points, while Jeff Allen logged 12 points.

Players:

Jeff Allen – A Wash, 6’8”, 220 pound forward, international pro – A rugged driver and interior battler, Allen also hit a few spot up shots. Is a competitor.

Played in Israel last year. Could head to Turkey this season.

D'Vauntes Smith-Rivera got shots up often and early last night.

Brandon Peel - A Wash, 6’7”, 210 pound forward – A recent Central Connecticut State graduate, Peel was a beast on the boards and in the paint, including attacking the rim and protecting the cup. He’s a heckuva competitor.

Could be headed to Spain’s second division league this season.

Marcus Thornton – A Wash, 6’3”, 185 pound guard – A second round pick (#45 overall) of the Boston Celtics this year, Thornton is headed to Consultivest Pesaro (Italy) for seasoning. Should flourish there, as he can shoot at all levels, and knows how to score.

A hard worker - one who graduated from William and Mary this spring - Thornton competes when he hits the court. Last night played solidly, but didn’t get enough chances to get an offensive flow.

Tre Campbell – A Wash, 6’2”, 175 pound junior guard, Georgetown – Got to the hoop early…(Premium Court)

Kaleb Johnson – A Wash, 6’7”, 205 pound sophomore forward, Georgetown – Posted smaller guards effectively...(Premium Court).

D’Vauntes Smith-Rivera – Tombs, 6’3”, 215 pound guard – Came out on fire, hoisting from deep. An A Wash coach was overhead telling Johnson, when guarding DSR “Get upon on him. You have to play him tighter than that…You know him well”. DSR made them pay.

Cooled off in the second half, though he did hit some key free throws.

A recent G’Town graduate, DSR shared of his next hoops steps…(Premium Court).

Rodney Pryor – Tombs, 6’5”, 205 pound graduate swingman, Georgetown – Again Pryor put the ball into the hole…(Premium Court)

Marcus Derrickson – Tombs, 6’8, 250 pound sophomore forward, Georgetown - Shot well early, including trail and pick/pop shots. Also...(Premium Court)

Jagan Mosely – Tombs, 6’3”, 200 pound freshman guard, Georgetown – Was quiet offensively (four points), yet impacted…(Premium Court)
