Tough one in Verizon
November 14, 2015 - Prior to Saturday's contest with Radford, head coach John Thompson III and his Georgetown Hoyas team all indicated the Highlanders would not be overlooked in anticipation of this week's foe, local rival Maryland. In fact senior guard and captain D'Vauntes Smith-Rivera noted not focusing on the opponent at hand is "how you get beat".

Whether Radford was taken seriously or not, the Hoyas came up short, suffering a 82-80, double overtime loss in front of 8,187 Verizon Center fans.
"Disappointing. Disappointing. We had our chances, but they continuously made the plays they had to do to win" said a subdued Thompson afterward. He later added "You have to give Mike (Jones, Radford's coach) and his group all the credit. They came in here and played tough. Both teams could have packed it in, but we kept fighting back and forth, back and forth, and a big time player made a big time shot".
That would be senior Radford guard Rashun Davis, who sealed the win in double OT with a three point shot from the left flank. The jumper followed a sequence where Smith-Rivera passed to sophomore guard L.J. Peak who missed, with around nine seconds remaining. Seven ticks later Davis was the hero. Peak's subsequent deep heave was not true, but also left his hand late.
Davis led all scorers with 28 points, also adding four rebounds and five assists. Senior Radford guard Cameron Jones followed him in scoring, notching 20 points, plus pulled down seven rebounds, second on the team to senior forward Kion Brown's 10 caroms. Brown also scored 10 points.
The Hoyas were bested on the glass 43-37, including an offensive rebounding deficit of 10. Senior Hoya center Bradley Hayes led all rebounders with 12, while also serving as his team's high-point man via a career high 19.
After a first half that saw seven ties subsequent to the Hoyas trailing by four, G'Town earned a seven point scoring advantage during the second stanza's first eight minutes, 25 seconds. Sometime during back to back timeouts, Radford's Jones then told his team 'they made a run, now it's time for us to make ours'.
That they did, as over three and a half minutes later their deficit was whittled to one. With 1:43 in regulation RU was up five, a 12 point turnaround.
What then occurred was stirring: Sophomore forward Isaac Copeland sank a three ball, the clock reading :33. Five seconds later Peak (seven points, five rebounds) along with backcourt and classmate Tre Campbell (six points, five rebounds) forced Davis into a turnover, with Peak scoring an and-one layup.
Unfortunately he missed the free throw, a error that kept the score knotted at 64, additionally serving as a metaphor for G'Town woe - after shooting 19-20 (95%) from the line in the first half, to Thompson's chagrin his team managed only 40% (2-5) in the second period, and 2-7 or 28.6% in both overtimes. The team's overall 71.9% FT mark dwarfed Radford's 44.4% (8-18), as did it's charity stripe attempt numbers (32-18), but key misses there and other errors doomed Georgetown.
Opined Thompson, "I just think in general they made the plays that needed to be made to win the game. We didn't get the stops when we needed. We didn't get the rebounds that we needed to get.
"And that being said, you make your foul shots, you make your open shots, you win".
For the record, his team shot 47.2%, 31.8% from three ball land, the last stat seeing none made or tried in overtime. Radford managed 43.6% from the field and 40% on three pointers.
Georgetown (0-1) takes on cross town rival Maryland, Tuesday. Radford, undefeated at 1-0, travels to VCU for a Monday tilt.
