Pro City Kenner Games: Day 9

Five games, five outcomes from yesterday's Nike DC Pro City Kenner work. Contest reports are below. Talk about it on Premium Court.

Tombs 88 PAPA 76

A halftime tie and three point lead within two minutes of the second half wasn't enough for Tombs, who collectively expanded it. Georgetown's Amir Spears led the charge, finishing with 26 points, four rebounds, four assists. He had answers.

Spears had help; Morgan State's Will Thomas poured in 21 points on 10-16 shooting overall, 3-5 from long distance, and grabbed 11 rebounds. Rob Montgomery, a former G-League performer now headed to Germany's Pro A League, contributed four points, seven rebounds and a ton of toughness.

PAPA got 20 points, five rebounds via international league stalwart, Zaid Hearst, who is also arguably the best Mid Atlantic Select grassroots alum, ever. Andrew 'Spongebob' Washington, a major protagonist, dropped 11 points in addition to a slew of verbal jabs, while Maryland's Hakim Hart finished with 10 points.

Clyde's 72 Higher Level 60

Notes

Sponge Has Returned - Many didn't realize Andrew 'Spongbob' Washington is recuperating from achilles injury, with Pro City Kenner standing as his fist real competition in months. His body is re-acclimating to high level play.

His mouth is in prime form; a well regarded trash talker, Washington, who plays professionally locally and nationally, uses words as both weapons against foes and a charge for himself.

"They were taking trash personally" said Washington afterward. He went on to reveal "i was just trying to get a couple of possessions" for his team by throwing opponents off.

Foes should expect Washington to continue coming at them: "Now I have a hit list".

Big Friends - An interesting battle was Noel Brown vs. Qudus Wahab. Not only are these guys similarly sized - both stand around 6'10" - but also played in high school at Flint Hill, with Rico Reed coaching both, and share a common mentor. Obviously there is great familiarity among the two, and affection as they are friends.

Noel bested Wahab statistically, though their contributions were similar; both plied their trade in the paint, altered shots and played with presence. Wahab (G'Town) against Brown (GW), Higher Level vs. Clyde's was a treat.

Eye Poppers - Quincy Allen of Colorado showed up and displayed a high level of athleticism. Shot 6-13 overall, 1-3 from distance, but unlike high school didn't seem automatic from the floor.

Malik Henry, who played at VMI last year played both sides of the ball, providing energy throughout. A swingman, Henry also competes the entire game and in every aspect of it.

Jamel Melvin is starting to gain Kenner traction, scoring in the paint, defending and providing effort. He's a unique blend of skills and length. When Melvin decides the paint should be his, watch out!
