Hoyas get old and new wins this weekend

May 7, 2017 - Head coach Patrick Ewing and his staff had a successful weekend, nabbing a pair of visiting recruits. One could view them as something old and something new.

First the ‘aged’: South Dakota graduate transfer Trey Dickerson has decided to wear Blue and Grey. A 10.4 points, 2.2 rebounds and 2.8 assists per game contributor last season for the Horizon League champion Coyotes. Dickerson started his collegiate sojourn at Williston State C.C., where he attained First Team All-JUCO status after starring at God’s Academy (TX) in high school.

After Williston, Dickerson headed to the Big Ten’s Iowa in 2014-15. As a Hawkeye, Dickerson played sparingly, chalking up 2.7 points during his sole season there, including an eight point tally against Wisconsin.

Now the ‘new’: Freshman 7’2” center Chris Sodom also decided to be a Hoya. As HoyaReport.com previously reported, Sodom, a former Class of 2017 New Mexico signee who decided to reopen his recruitment upon the Lobo’s former coach’s firing, was being chased by “Georgetown, Pitt, Oklahoma State and Mizzou”.

Sodom, hailing from West Africa, was a standout at Tennessee Prep Academy and the UAA travel team Houston Defenders the last year-plus, his first such stint in America.

Both address glaring needs for Ewing, in his first year at G'Town's helm.

Dickerson provides backcourt play for a roster short of it, a scenario made more extreme by the recent knee surgery of junior Tre Campbell. Presently the Hoyas will work out this summer with only senior Jonathan Mulmore, sophomore Jagan Mosely and now Dickerson as guard performers.

Sodom, a developmental yet true center, is the only natural backup to expected starter and possible break out player Jessie Govan in the pivot.

With Sodom and Dickerson in tow, the Hoyas have at minimum two open scholarships for the 2017-18 campaign, a number that increases by one if the rumored departure of soon-to-be senior Tre Mourning materializes.
