August 22, 2012 - When I first med Boubacar Aw, he was a student at Georgetown, teaming with Allen Iverson and Victor Page to produce some of the most exciting Hoya teams ever. As the defensive stopper, the club's success - which ended in a 1997 Elite Eight loss to UMass.

His numbers, over the course of a career spanning 1994 - 1998, were 6.7 points and 4.1 rebounds per game, including a senior average of 11.4 points and 6.2 caroms each time out. Those stats are not eye popping, but do not do justice to his impact. It also must be said his averages improved each year as a Hoya.

After Georgetown, Aw plied his trade in South America for close to 15 years. Always an engaging, intelligent guy - Boubacar would always talk to fans honestly and openly - Aw, who majored in International Relations on The Hilltop - continued to learn, not only burnishing his basketball skills but ostensibly learning Spanish as well: A native of Thies, Senegal, Aw speaks at least one African dialect, French, English and Spanish.

His command of Spanish was so strong, after retiring from hoops last year, according to StarNewsVarsity.com, Aw took a substitute high school instructor position teaching the language in North Carolina. Along with that came an invitation to help coach boy's basketball.

Aw on coaching hoops this past year at Cape Fear Academy as an assistant: "It's something you have to learn. There are so many things you have to know to play basketball. I just want to be a positive influence".

Well, he's now parlayed that into a full time Spanish teaching job and coaching basketball, doing both at Hoggard High School (NC). StarNewsVarsity.com has also reported Aw was recently been announced as that school's head girls varsity basketball coach.

Per the article, Boubacar, who has never coached girls, is not daunted by the task, since "Girls are athletes", and "They play the sports just like everyone else".

"It has been a wonderful ride", Aw later said in the report, of landing both gigs. "And now to coaching girls, the job opened up at Hoggard and they gave it to me. I'm really excited. I wanted to be a teacher and a coach so this is a whole new beginning".
