This and That: DePaul at Georgetown

Below are observations and quotes relative to Georgetown's 68-65 loss to DePaul.

Billingsley Brought It

Freshman forward Jalin Billingsley has been somewhat enigmatic this season; standing around 6'7", he possesses size, length and reportedly a skill set that includes shooting and driving. Some have said during early practices the Cleveland native was the best player on Georgetown's roster.

It's been an uneven freshman campaign for Billingsley, sometimes getting solid reserve minutes, other games being snatched in and out the lineup. Last night was well, different.

"Today, this was his best game of the year" stated head Georgetown coach, Pat Ewing. "He gave us energy, he gave us effort. He gave us somebody with size and athleticism...That's what I've been waiting on all year".

Jalin's stat line was 10 points, two rebounds and three blocks, work supplied in 22 minutes of play. For those counting, those are career highs in points and rejections, while also standing as the third most minutes Billingsley has played in 15 consecutive games.

Matching Up

With just less than half the back stanza remaining, DePaul deployed a rather unique 2-3 match up zone, helping the Blue Demons erase a three point deficit.

The defense first used by Stubblefield with the clock reading a few ticks south of 10 minutes to go, stressed picking up offensive players by guards, checking them through an area, before passing them off to others.

Ewing blamed his team, not DePaul's scheme for it's success, indicating "It didn't put us on our heels, we just didn't execute". The coach decried "two huge turnovers" and "I think we just didn't execute our zone plays".

Stubblefield noted of his decision to deploy the match up "I thought they were getting in a rhythm in the second half from an offensive standpoint, and we felt like we needed to do something to try and get some stops and kind of stagnate them a little bit so we did go to our match up. And it proved to be pretty effective for us".

Where did Stubblefield, a long time assistant coach with stops in Cincinnati, Oregon and other spots, learn this particular match up zone?

"It's something we did a lot of at Oregon, and want to do more of it here and we haven't did it here quite as much as I'd like to", shared the coach.
