On Point 73 Clyde's 72
Despite 38 points from former Lasalle Explorer Steven Weingarten, Clyde's couldn't withstand the balanced attack of Raymar Watson inside, and Malcolm Lemmons outside, contributors of 18 points and 21 points respectively.
Former Hoya Austin Freeman had 11 points and five rebounds for Clyde's, while Ryan Williams, a Georgetown student that may walk on, dropped 10.
Players:
Steve Weingarten, 6'7", 215 pounds, Clyde's - Active and strong around the tin, Weingarten also bombed from three ball range. His versatile performance virtually sealed the win.
Penetration off face ups can be improved.
Raymar Watson, 6'6", 220 pounds, On Point - Slasher attacked the rim. Will also bang down low.
Didn't show much consistent shooting range.
Malcolm Lemmons, 6'5", 190 pounds, On Point - Having just transferred to Cal State San Marcos from Niagara, the new CSSM Cougar will be a keeper; long a baseline driver, Lemmons now has range to three point land on his jumper, and separation moves to free himself. Still drives to the basket.
Next, must use that new found perimeter freedom to find people more.
Tombs 82 Team Takeover 52
A game that featured intriguing matchups somehow got away from Takeover. See Premium Court for a rundown of Reggie Cameron vs Mikael Hopkins, D'Vauntes Smith-Rivera vs Jabril Trawick and Josh Smith vs Jordan Omogbehin.
Omogbehin attends USF, the others are of course Hoyas.
G'Town sophomore Smith-Rivera led all scorers with 19 points, while Cameron, a freshman dropped 17 points for Tombs.
Junior Blue and Grey guy Trawick paced Takeover with 20 points, while teammate and classmate Hopkins contributed nine. Incoming Indiana freshman Stanford Robinson had six points.
Players:
Jordan Omogbehin, 7'2", 330 pounds, Takeover - Not the greatest outing for this USF sophomore, Omogbehin struggled to get in the flow.
Going forward must continue working hard and rounding into form after several surgeries. Has tremendous upside and physical capability (less than 10% body fat).
Stan Robinson, 6'3', 175 pounds, Takeover - Robinson has been working to be more a point guard, given his explosion, athleticism and heart. Stan goes hard.
Is too dependent on his left hand, which should be his first focus developmentally. He's not a bad shooter, but lacks confidence from distance.
Premier 74 DCX 62
Hoya senior guard Markel Starks tried hard to propel DCX, owners of a 38-34 halftime lead to victory. It wouldn't occur, as Premier, a team laden with older players wouldn't have it, eventually wearing down a DCX crew missing several bigs.
Starks finished with a near game high 27 points, while teammate Damien Harris logged 13, while also grabbing numerous rebounds.
Andrew 'Spongebob' Washington bested Starks by one point, pacing all scorers. Teammate Curtis Massey dropped 15 points for Premier, while Deontay Twyman chipped in 12 points, followed by Corey Allmond's 10.
Players:
Damien Harris, 6'7" 220 pounds, DCX - Harris was a standout rebounder and frontcourt presence for Virginia Union last year, where he plans to return for his senior year. To maximize his CIAA impact, Harris must be able to draw defenders away from the cup for easy mid-range baskets.
Is a physical force, when motivated to be.
Andrew Washington, 6'3, 220 pounds, Premier - After taking a year off from international ball to "get my mind together and deal with some personal issues", Washington is back in force, driving, scoring and finding people, particularly after receiving the ball in isolation situations. Is a physical player that will also play mind games with opponents and refs. Can defend.
Shared "I'll probably go to Russia this year. I have a good offer from a second division team there". Increased use of his jumper - 'Spongebob's first default is to get into the lane - will help internationally.
Deontay Twyman, 6'1", 165 pounds, Premier - Another player out of basketball last year, Twyman acquitted himself well, primarily bombing from the outside with touch.
Is capable of playing somewhere professionally. To make that a certainty, this former Quinnipiac performer must hit the weight room, which will allow him to once again drive and find people with more aggressiveness.
Curtis Massey, 6'8", 200 pounds Premier - Previously a Pro City Update write up recipient, Massey was certain to correct this writer's assessment of his physical stature. And he was correct.
Massey also once again displayed good work around and at the tin. Will rebound and score in the paint. Is a smart player.
Also once again, Massey should work on letting his jumper fly, with confidence.
Sean Beins, 6'8", 210 pounds, Premier - A sophomore at Division II Mercyhurst, Beins battled, rebounded and scored around the tin.
Needs to get stronger.
