Higher level received a boost from D-League pro forward Akil Mitchell, who scored 17 points including 14 in the second half. The former UVA standout also cleaned the glass and played stout defense.
A pair of professional forwards dropped 19 points for Metro - Elon Bush and Terrance Carter - the latter also being a former DMV star at Largo High School.
Georgetown sophomores, guard Tre Campbell and forward Trey Mourning, scored 15 points and 14 points, respectively for Higher Level. Both made key plays down the stretch.
A well played game was marred by an unfortunate occurrence; longtime DMV stalwart and professional center Calvin Brown went down in a second half heap, eventually being helped off the floor and transported to a hospital. Later it was discovered he has torn a ligament in his knee.
Godspeed to Brown, a former Norfolk State standout, in his recovery.
#4 Hoop Magic 72 #5 Tombs 59
Georgetown senior guard Riyan Williams led all scorers with 20 points, while Belgium league center Jason Love had 17 points and former Hoya and present European pro Julian Vaughn chipped in 13 - all in the second half - for Hoop Magic, who led for most of the game.
Freshman Hoyas, forward Kaleb Johnson and Jessie Govan, paced Tombs, who just didn't seem to get over the hump - energy just wasn't there. Case in point was sophomore guard Anthony Carthern's (eight points, Geneva College) second half verbal outburst - after being pinned and posted by one of Hoop Magic's bigs on a switch, the fiery Carthern yelled at his teammates "C'mon, we need to get back!"
He was spot on.
