In Cap Classic, a win is expected

April 25, 2015 - Today's 42nd Capital Classic has generated a good buzz in the DMV, as stars from across the county and DMV will battle it out. The event, managed by DMVElite, starts with a 6p preliminary game pitting DC/PG vs. MoCo/NoVa standouts, followed by the Capital All-Stars battling a group of U.S. All-Stars at 8p.

Per usual, the second game has created the biggest stir. It makes sense, given its standing as 23 scheduled players all headed to NCAA Division I competition next season. Schools like Georgetown (Jessie Govan, South Carolina (P.J. Dozier), Central Connecticut State ( Eric Bowles), Minnesota Kevin Dorsey, Louisville Ryan McMahon and a host of others are represented.
The U.S. All Stars, a collection of players from around the country, is a confident lot.
"I think we built team camaraderie right now" said Dozier a U.S. All Star, after yesterday's practice. "I feel good about this game tomorrow".
McMahon, Dozier's teammate, while saying the game "Should be fun", shared the "USA is trying to win it".
Future Hoya Govan, a 6'10" U.S. All Star center indicated his expectation for tonight's game include "Just go out there and have fun. You know we have a lot of great players on this team. We should come out and hopefully show these DC fans out stuff".
That would be a bigger team, one with an obvious size advantage. How will the smaller Capital All Stars combat that?
"From what I hear, they have a few big guys" answered Capital All Star and HD Woodson (DC) coach Trey Mines after his team's practice. "In an All Star game, it's going to be fast paced. On the defensive end I'm going to get the guys together and preach...make those guys shoot one shot, we can get out and run. They're not going to be able to keep up with you. Eventually that size can be used against them".
Dorsey, a Capital All Star guard had a somewhat different yet related antidote for their opponent's size, noting "I would just say everybody has to rebound...everybody has to step up and rebound". The U.S. All Stars boast larger guards as well.
Familiarity could be a local crew advantage.
In answering if prior knowledge of each other was a benefit, Capital All-Star Bowles noted "Definitely, the group of guys we have, we all know each other. We've all played against each other and with each other; we know how everybody plays...we just have to get everybody in the right position to get the win".
Can the DMV's guys step up and repel a big, skilled national-based group? Come and see this evening.
