First off is the Maryland Terrapin slant. A Potomac (MD) versus O'Connell (VA) matchup boasts "Dion Wiley and Melo Trimble facing off, before they team up with the Terps next season". Yeldell believes that the pair signing with Maryland "a big deal, because in the past Maryland hasn't recruited well at home and these are the two highest area players in this area".
Add five of six games being "public versus private schools" as a boon; Yeldell believes "that will add to the energy of the event". Furthermore "We have six of the top 20 teams in the are playing, including four in the top 10", said Yeldell. "I think these kind of matchups are great for the metropolitan area, especially since most of these teams don't play each other normally".
The Tip-Off Classic, held at Dr. Henry A. Wise High School (MD) start at noon Saturday, with the last game jumping off at 7p. The schedule follows:
12:00pm Bullis (MD) vs. North Point(MD)
1:30pm Clinton Christian (MD) vs. Capitol Christian (MD)
3:00pm Douglass (MD) vs. Bishop McNamara (MD)
4:30pm Riverdale Baptist (MD) vs. DuVal (MD)
6:00pm St. John's (DC) vs. Wise (MD)
7:30pm Bishop O'Connell (VA) vs. Potomac (MD)
In terms of expected players, a press release spells it out in good detail: "The Classic will also feature several Division 1 upperclassmen, such as Romelo Trimble (O'Connell/Maryland), Dion Wiley (Potomac/Maryland), Chinanu Onuaku (Riverdale Baptist/Louisville), Tre Campbell (St. John's/Georgetown), James Palmer (St. John's/Miami), Jon Davis (Clinton Christian/DePaul), Darian Bryant (St. John's/George Washington), Darian Anderson (St. John's/Fairleigh Dickinson), Andre Walker (Bullis/Hofstra), Byron Hawkins (Clinton Christian/Towson) and Mike Morsell (St. John's/Towson).
"Some of the top underclassmen are Leroy Butts (Clinton Christian), Anthony Cowan (St. John's), Randall Broddie (Potomac), Alex Long (Riverdale Baptist), Sam Green (McNamara), Taron Oliver (Riverdale Baptist), Edward Polite (DuVal), A.J. Wilson (Duval), Ako Adams (O'Connell) and Develle Phillips (Clinton Christian)".
Entrance cost is $10. Kids under seven get in for free.
"The reason we started the DMV Tip-Off Classic was to offer a great event to the DC area to help showcase the talented teams and players here, early in the season" said Yeldell. They've met those expectations with the Classic, now in its second year.
Come out and enjoy the opportunity.
