Ewing at Media Day, Pt. 1

November 2, 2017 - Tuesday, Patrick Ewing held his first Georgetown Media Day, having been hired as the school's head men's basketball coach this spring. The session, which lasted close to a half hour afforded Ewing a chance to opine on a variety of topics.

Below is a first installment of Ewing's comments. They included discussing: Transition from pro to college ball and anything surprising in that regard, the search for lead guard (present/future), preparation for season, BIG EAST play being the focus, Jessie Govan’s work and expectations of him, style of play, impact of attention received on himself and players, goal of non-conference schedule action, toning down what players do for college plus coaching in rivalries (Syracuse, St. John’s) experienced as a player.

Be sure to return for more, as well as statements from players. While Ewing et al did hold many cards close to their proverbial vests, the savvy viewer can divine not only themes, but specifics.

One issue sure to illicit conversation is the Hoyas' out of conference slate for 2017-18. Roundly hailed as one of the worst in history from a competitive standpoint, Ewing shared logic behind deciding to schedule teams with very little NCAA Tournament footprint, schools that have virtually no chance of gaining Big Dance entry without winning their conference tournaments and experiencing regrettable 2016-17 seasons. Part of his take Tuesday, on having a cream puff OOC slate: "Jt3 (former Hoya coach John Thompson III) had one of the toughest schedules in college basketball, and he’s not here right now….My guys are coming off two poor years. It’s my job to mend their egos, to get them to believe in themselves again, and the BIG EAST is what it’s all about; get your guys believing in themselves and get ready for the BIG EAST competition. Do well in the BIG EAST and the sky’s the limit. Who knows how far we can go with we do well in the BIG EAST".
