January 26, 2014 - Times are hard for the depleted Georgetown men's basketball team, yesterday being its fifth loss in six tries, losing at Creighton 76-63 last night. The defeat at Omaha, Nebraska's Century Link Center gives the Hoyas an 11-8 record and 3-5 BIG EAST standing.
G'Town led by 11-7 after freshman guard Reggie Cameron's three point jumper. Creighton's senior forward Ethan Wragge responded with a three of his own, tying the game with yet another long ball close to a minute and a half later. From there, the BlueJays outscored G'Town by 10 the close the half.
The Hoyas managed to keep their deficit around 10 earlier in the second stanza, until being stuck on 40 for over four minutes and forty seconds. By the time senior guard Markel Starks' jumper ended their drought with 8:02 remaining, G'Town was down 18, and would never get closer than 12.
Starks led the game with 21 points, and added five assists. Sophomore guard D'Vauntes Smith-Rivera followed him with 18 points and also contributed six rebounds, while junior forward Mikael Hopkins logged 14 points and five caroms.
Georgetown held Creighton's all-everything forward Doug McDermott to 14 points on 5-15 shooting. Reserve junior center Will Artino equaled McDermott's point total. Three other BlueJays logged double figure scoring; junior guard Devin Brooks (11 points), senior guard Jahenns Manigat (10 points) and Wragge with 12.
Senior G'Town forward Nate Lubick and McDermott were the game's leading board grabbers, snatching 10 apiece. Creighton's Brooks and junior guard Austin Chapman each corralled seven rebounds, the latter leading the contest with seven assists.
Shooting numbers: G'Town managed 39.3% from the field, 30% on three pointers. The BlueJay's finished at 46.2% and 33.3%, respectively.
Creighton (17-3, 7-1) is first in the BIG EAST and next welcomes St. John's to Century Link. That Tuesday game starts at 9p EST.
