Thompson Leads Three in Double Figures as Georgetown Beats NJIT, 84-44

WASHINGTON. - Junior forward Hollis Thompson (Los Angeles, Calif./Loyola) tied a career record with six three-pointers and scored 20 points as the Georgetown men's basketball team hit a season-high12 three-pointers en route to an 84-44 win over the New Jersey Institute of Technology in front of 8,742 fans at Verizon Center Saturday afternoon.

It was the fifth-straight win for the Hoyas, who improved to 7-1 overall while the Highlanders fall to 3-4 overall.

Three players scored in double figures for the Blue & Gray, while 11 different players scored at least one point, including sophomore walk-on John Caprio (North Caldwell, N.J./Seton Hall Prep), who hit his first career field goal and finished with two points and two rebounds in a career-high six minutes.

Thompson hit 7-of-10 shots overall and 6-of-7 from long distance for his seventh game in double figures this season and his second 20-point game. Senior guard Jason Clark (Arlington, Va./Bishop O'Connell) scored 10 points and had five rebounds, while freshman forward Mikael Hopkins (Hyattsville, Md./DeMatha) scored a career-high 12 points. Freshman forward Tyler Adams (Brandon, Miss./Brandon) added eight points and six rebounds. Senior center Henry Sims (Baltimore, Md./Mount St. Joseph's) scored eight points and had five rebounds with four assists, while sophomore guard Markel Starks (Accokeek, Md./Georgetown Prep) chipped in nine points.

Georgetown, coming off a thrilling 57-55 win at No. 12 Alabama on Thursday night, led by 14 points (42-28) at the break, but out-scored the Highlanders 18-0 over the first six minutes of the second half and pushed the lead to 60-28 on a layup from Thompson with 14:00 minutes left.

The lead hit 40 points, 75-35, on a layup from Hopkins with 6:21 to play and the Hoyas matched their biggest lead, 42 points, on a free throw from Adams with 5:48 left (77-35) and on a layup from Adams (79-37) with 5:15 left.

The Hoyas jumped out to a 14-point lead at the half, 42-28, thanks largely to the team connecting on 53.8 percent of their three-pointers (7-of-13). GU scored the first eight points of the game - three-pointers from Starks and Thompson and a jumper from Sims - to take an 8-0 lead at the 17:02 mark and the Highlanders hit their first field goal 3:36 into the game, a layup from Isaiah Wilkerson. The lead was 14 points, 16-2, after a dunk from freshman forward Otto Porter (Sikeston, Mo./Scott County Central).

NJIT pulled to within 10 points, 20-10, on a three-pointer from Wilkerson at the 8:27 mark, but a three from Clark and a jumper from Sims made it 25-10 with 7:08 left. The Highlanders out-scored the Hoyas, 11-6, over a span of 2:30 and pulled to within nine points, 30-21, on a three-pointer from Ryan Woods. A pair of layups Hopkins gave the Hoyas a 42-28 lead at the break.
