Last weekend Georgetown Women's Basketball was THE ticket in town, as UConn came to town. Add playing in the highly regarded Entertainment and Sports Arena in Washington, DC - a 4k plus capacity gym - and there was little reason to not attend.
Those that did, including an expected huge UConn contingent, were treated to a gem, one unfortunately that ended a 67-59, Connecticut win. Attendance ultimately stood at almost 3500.
Coverage follows:
Stat Take
Leading HC James Howard's Hoyas in scoring was freshman Kennedy Faunteroy, dropping a game high 24 points. She also paced the Blue and Gray in rebounding (six). Senior forward Graceann Bennett joined her in reaching double figure scoring at 11 points.
UConn's Geno Auriemma, one of the most high profile coaches in the sport, saw both grad center Dorka Juhasz and junior wing Aubrey Griffin log 18 points. Junior forward Aaliyah Edwards reached 13 points, while Nika Muhl, a junior point guard, chipped in 10 points.
Dorka's 15 caroms was a game best, her team dominating G'Town' on the boards, 43-23. This includes a weighty 28-12, defensive rebound advantage.
The Huskies, 22-3 overall, 14-1 in BIG EAST play, shot 44% overall, a lamentable 25% on three balls. G'Town (12-13, 5-11) went 37.1% overall, 28.6% beyond the arc.
Strategy Point
The game hinged to a large degree on depth or lack thereof. Four Huskies played at least 39 minutes. No position grouping was more impacted than point/lead guard, as Muhl was the only such player UConn had, due to multiple injuries.
Auriemma talked about the challenge, as did Howard, who threw a pretty aggressive trapping scheme during the fourth quarter.
