Hoyas Edged by No. 4/4 UConn

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University women’s basketball team fought valiantly, but dropped a close one to the No. 4/4 University of Connecticut Huskies, 67-59, on Saturday evening at the Entertainment and Sports Arena in Southeast Washington, D.C. With the loss, the Blue & Gray falls to 12-13 overall and 5-11 in BIG EAST play.

What They’re Saying

● “I thought we had a good three days in preparation, we had talked about some adjustments from our last game and some things we could do better. We as a team talked about what they could do as well as the coaches, what they could do to move in a different direction. I thought the buy in was there, the focus was there. Anytime we get into a game like this, the first thing I’m always looking for is their walk through. They looked to be more focused and locked in and that’s what we got.” - Head Coach James Howard

● “I loved playing here, all of the fans and especially being home. It gave us a different type of energy and I just loved playing here. I wish this could be our home gym every game!” - Kennedy Fauntleroy

How it Happened

● The Hoyas jumped out to an 8-1 lead on triples from freshman Kennedy Fauntleroy and senior captain Graceann Bennett.

● UConn (22-4, 14-1 BIG EAST) cut it back to two before a traditional three-point play from graduate student Kristina Moore gave the Hoyas momentum.

● Late buckets from Fauntleroy would keep GU on top as the Blue & Gray led 17-13 at the end of the first quarter.

● A 9-0 run midway through the second stanza allowed the Huskies to pull ahead, however, the Hoya defense buckled down and forced turnovers as late scores from junior captain Kelsey Ransom and sophomore Ariel Jenkins made it 31-28 in favor of UConn at the half.

● The Huskies owned the third quarter outsourcing GU 19-8.

● The only points of the quarter for the Blue & Gray all came from Fauntleroy as Georgetown went into the final period trailing 50-36.

● The Hoyas looked like a new team in the fourth as the offense chipped away at the lead.

● A three-point play from Bennett sparked a 13-2 run pulling GU within five and sending the crowd to its feet with the cheers of Hoya Saxa ringing throughout the building.

● GU would battle down the stretch, but could not find a go-ahead basket and was forced to foul late resulting in the 67-59 decision.

Of Note

● Fauntleroy put together an all-around performance leading the Hoyas with 24 points and six rebounds to go along with five steals, two blocks and an assist.

● Bennett was the other Hoya in double figures with 11 points, four assists and three rebounds on the day.

● The Hoyas shot 37.1% (23-62) from the field, and the Blue & Gray allowed 44.0% (22-50) shooting by the Huskies.

● GU was outrebounded by UConn 43-23 in the game, and Georgetown forced 23 UConn turnovers on 11 steals.

● Dorka Juhasz and Aubrey Griffin led UConn with 18 points apiece as two of four Huskies in double figures.
