February 14, 2018 - Having averaged 12.5 points and five rebounds over games at Providence and against Seton Hall in Capital One Arena last week, Monday the BIG EAST Conference awarded Jamorko Pickett its Freshman of the Week Award.
Against Seton Hall, an 83-80 win Pickett, a 6’8” Georgetown freshman wingman dropped 18 points, three rebounds, three assists two blocks and a steal. The Washington, DC native went 7-15 from the floor during that contest, shooting that included key second half buckets, helping the Hoyas mitigate second half Seton Hall runs. That work included two three pointers, a regular shot, free throw, rebound and steal, dunk and assist, over around twelve and a half minutes.
Afterward, junior forward Marcus Derrickson lauded his young teammate, saying “Jamarko stepped up and made some big shots for us, and help us withstand the run”.
Head coach Pat Ewing, at this point in the season, expects such contributions from Jamorko.
“He’s not a freshman anymore, like I’ve been telling him. He’s going into the second half of his freshman year” said Ewing, the former Hoya star in his first year as head coach. “He’s been talking on the challenge…In the first half of the year, he’s been thinking of himself as primarily a jump shooter. Now he’s putting the ball on the floor, with confidence, and taking it to the hole, and also taking a couple of dribbles and knocking down his shot.
“I think a couple of their guys were talking trash to him, and he was going back at them. So, that’s the Jamarko Pickett I recruited, and he’s only going to get better”.
