Whittington's Double-Double Leads No. 15 Georgetown to 81-68 Win

WASHINGTON - No. 15 Georgetown produced another convincing win this afternoon at the Verizon Center, as sophomore forward Greg Whittington (Columbia, Md./Oakland Mills) scored a career-high 25 points for his third double-double of the season, beating Western Carolina 81-68, in front of

Wittington's 25 points led four players in double figures, hitting 8-of-12 shots from the floor, 6-of-8 from the line, and grabbing 11 rebounds for his third double-double of the season

Sophomore forward Otto Porter Jr. (Morley, Mo./ Scott County Central) scored 12 points and had nine rebounds, junior guard Markel Starks (Accokeek, Md. / Georgetown Prep) added 10 points, and sophomore guard Jabril Trawick (Philadelphia, Pa./ Abington Friends) scored a career-best 14 points off the bench.

It was the sixth-straight win for the Hoyas, who improve to 9-1 overall, and remain unbeaten on their home court. With this loss, the Catamounts fall 4-7.

The Hoyas finished the day shooting 49.1 percent from the floor (26-of-53), hit 40.0 percent of their three-pointers (6-of-15) and were 69.7 percent from the free throw line (23-of-33)

The Hoyas took control of the game in the second half, out-scoring the Catamounts 18-to-8 in the first nine minutes. With 11:24 left to play, a hanging layup from Starks pushed the Hoyas lead to 26 points (66-40), the largest of the game. Juniors Moses Ayegba (Kano, Nigeria / Progressive Christian (Md.)) and Stephen Domingo (San Fransisco, Calif. / St. Ignatius) chipped in 3 points each this half. With the ball in Whittington's hands, the Hoyas ran out the last 18-seconds of the game standing still, to finish with a 13-point lead over the Catamounts.

Georgetown started the game off strong, winning the tip-off and taking a 4-0 lead in the first minute. After two consecutive three-pointers by the Catamount's Tom Tankelewicz, however, the Catamounts were back in the game with a 6-4 lead by 17:30. Two free throws and a three-pointer in the ninth minute from Georgetown's Jabril Trawick gave the Hoyas back the lead, 18-15. The Hoyas were able to hold on to this lead for the remainder of the half, and with a last-second free throw from Whittington, they left the court with a 12-point lead (42-30), the largest of the half.

Whittington and Trawick ended the half already in double-digit points, with 13 and 11 respectively. The Hoyas shot 41 percent for field goals in the first half, and 75 percent (15-of-20) from the line. With five three-pointers (5-of-8) from Tankelewicz alone, Western Carolina shot 47 percent for 3-point field goals.

The Hoyas are back in action again Saturday, December 22nd, at the Verizon Center, as they take on local rival American University. Tipoff is set for noon, and the game will be shown on MASN.
