He puts it up
When Marquise Reed played at Pallotti (MD) and Capital Christian (MD) in high school, he was known as a bucket getter. And shot taker. Robert Morris head coach Toole acknowledged it afterward, saying "Oh, you know him well" when asked about Reed's offensive aggressiveness.
Having previously scored over twenty points against UNC, Reed is not a freshman, unknown quantity any more.
"I think part of his development is just learning how to do that within the flow of the college game" said Toole of the rookie's development. "He had 24 points against North Carolina, came back at Bradley and they defended him a little bit differently. He just kind of assumed it would be, you know, give me the ball and go.
"As you score points, you move up higher on the scouting report...So those guys have to learn how to score on a consistent basis and when the time is to go and make a play and when the time is to maybe continue to run offense. And so maybe learning that balance (is next for Reed)".
Versus G'Town, Reed finished with nine points and four assists on 2-9 shooting - against UNC he went 10-15. Head Hoya Thompson certainly was aware of Reed.
"He's coming back home. Big, big time scorer" said Thompson. "He's one of these guys that are going to get six points just by being on the court".
The Hoyas "just wanted to be attentive to him" continued the coach. "He's had some pretty good games already in his young career. He looks like he's going to keep doing what he did in high school, which was put the ball in the basket".
Toole is happy to have him: "He's been a great addition to our program, there is no doubt about it. And we're excited to have him continue to learn and develop. He has a unique skill set, where he is able to get shots for himself and others.
Reed's high school coach at Capital Christian, Van Whitfield, said of his former charge "Marquise is quickly adjusting to the rigor, demands and discipline that it takes to be a successful student-athlete at the collegiate level". He added "We played a top schedule at CCA and Marquise is accustomed to working within structured offensive schemes and sets against elite level competition".
Whitfield is proud of Reed being "on track to make the Dean's List".
