Sources point toward Hurley as option

As reported on Premium Court earlier today via sources, and later noted by Sporting News, Dan Hurley is certainly a possibility to take over Georgetown’s head coach position. The job was made available today, when John Thompson III was released.

A former Seton Hall point guard himself, Hurley presently coaches Rhode Island, where he and the Rams this season racked up Atlantic 10 Tournament champion honors and a NCAA Tournament bid. Rhody made it to that event’s second round before bowing out in narrow fashion.

Prior to Rhode Island, Hurley, in his fifth year there, coached at Wagner for a pair of seasons, the last campaign seeing him win 25 games.

Interestingly enough, like Thompson, whose father John Thompson, Jr is the scion of G'Town's program and brother Ronny also donned Blue and Grey, Hurley comes from a basketball family; his father, Bob, Sr. is one of the nation’s most celebrated high school bench leaders, while bother Bobby starred at Duke and played several seasons in the NBA – his career derailed by an auto accident – now coaching at Arizona State.

Just what does Hurley, who also coached down a level at St. Benedict’s Prep in Newark, New Jersey prior to leading Wagner and reportedly loves Rhody, offer?

For a more complete listing, as well as discussion of other possible candidates, see Premium Court.

Excerpts follow:

-Tough coach who was a tough player. Experience as a player who had to work hard for everything…

-Relates well to people...

-He and his staff can recruit not only the District-Maryland-Virginia area, but NY/NJ also.
