WASHINGTON - Junior forward Hollis Thompson (Los Angeles, Calif./Loyola) scored 13 points and had 10 rebounds to lead three players in double figures as No. 10 Georgetown used a 13-3 run midway through the second half en route to a 63-53 win over Providence in a BIG EAST men's basketball matchup at the Dunkin' Donuts Center Saturday night.
It was the second-straight win for the Hoyas, who improve to 20-5 overall and 10-4 in the BIG EAST, while Providence falls to 13-15 overall and 2-13 in league play.
Thompson recorded his third double-double of the season and second in the last three games. Senior guard Jason Clark (Arlington, Va./Bishop O'Connell) added 11 points and six rebounds and senior center Henry Sims (Baltimore, Md./Mount St. Joseph), had 10 points, seven rebounds and five assists. Sophomore forward Nate Lubick (Southborough, Mass./St. Marks), a native of nearby Southborough, Mass., scored nine points in his return home.
The Hoyas led by 11 points at the half, 31-20, and pushed the lead to 13 points on a thunderous dunk from Lubick on the first possession of the second half. The lead was 11 points on a jumper from Thompson with 17:17 to play in the game and 10 points, 36-26, on one of two free throws from Lubick with 16:27 remaining. Providence used a 6-0 spurt to pull within 36-32 on a dunk from Ron Giplaye with 14 minutes left.
Back-to-back three-pointers from Thompson and Clark, however, pushed the Hoya lead back to 10 points, 42-32, triggering a 13-3 run over 4:23 that saw Georgetown take its biggest lead to that point, 49-35, on a conventional three-point play from freshman forward Greg Whittington (Columbia, Md./Oakland Mills).
The Hoyas took their biggest lead of the game, 55-40, on a dunk from Sims with 4:49 left in the game.
The Hoyas jumped out to a 9-4 lead early in the game thanks to three-pointers from Clark, Starks and Lubick and the lead was up to 12-4 on a free throw from Lubick.
Georgetown maintained its lead after the mid-point of the first half on a breakaway dunk from Lubick with 8:18 to play and took its biggest lead, 21-11, on a layup from Porter with 4:30 to play in the half. Providence, however, pulled to within 23-21 on a pair of free throws from Bilal Dixon with 1:30 left. The Hoyas, however, scored the final eight points of the half, with a Porter layup and Thompson's three at the buzzer pushing the lead to 11 points.
Georgetown limited Providence to only 14.3 percent shooting from the field in the first half (4-of-28), but the Friars kept it close with 15 made free throws.
Georgetown continues its game two-game road trip on Tuesday, Feb. 21, visiting BIG EAST rival Seton Hall. The game will be shown live on MASN, with Eamon Macananey and Jim Spanarkel calling all of the action. Fans locally can tune in to Sports Talk AM 570 for the radio call from Rich Chvotkin.
