#1 Team Ohhs & Ahhs 77 #8 Beyond Belief 66
Ohhs & Ahhs used a superior front line to compensate for only having one point guard in the roster due to a now show and injury, besting Beyond Belief in a hard fought battle.
"It was huge for us" said head coach Chris Flegler, who noted "Just having that kind of size in the league is very important".
Early on it was GW junior forward Tyler Cavanaugh (25 points) and Maryland sophomore forward Robert Carter (14 points), while G'Town forward, sophomore Akoy Agau who dropped 10 points took up the charge early in the second half. Later in that stanza Flegler employed all three simultaneously, which proved crucial to the team's victory.
Though the big men made a huge difference, point guard Jerron Martin made it possible.
"He was steady, under control" said Flegler of Martin, an Ole Miss and junior college guard who will choose his new school soon. "Everybody get into a flow by the way he controlled the game".
Demetric Austin led Beyond Belief with 26 points, while Antonio Haymon, a professional, followed with 19 points. Both are forwards.
#6 On Point 76 #3 Premier Athletics 74
Up two at halftime, On Point went down by 10 with just over four minutes to go. Enter Josh Hart and Tre Kelley.
The former, a Villanova junior swingman started hitting shots and gaining possessions by hustling, before finishing with a game high 38 points.
Kelley, a European league pro (13 points) was central to the game's most important moment: With the score tied 74 and 5.3 seconds remaining, Kelley received a pass, raced down the floor and found GW junior guard Matt Hart with a no look dime. Hart converted the layup as the clock read .3 seconds remaining, sealing the win.
"When (Raymar) Watson got the rebound, I didn't know how much time was left" recalled Kelley, who received the outlet pass. "I glanced up, saw that I had five seconds and knew there was time to get a good shot...I saw that they reacted to me, and knew my teammate could get a good shot".
On Point's head coach Barry Aberdeen described his team's fight succinctly, telling them during the game and afterward "If you keep fighting, you can win!"
Premier Hoops, who deployed multiple schemes - 1-2-2 defensively, pro style pick and roll/iso offensively - got 15 points from professional guard Corey Allmond, while pro swingman Austin Cooley logged 10 points.
