No. 5 Georgetown Falls to Villanova, 67-57, in Final Regular Season Road Game

WASHINGTON - Sophomore forward Otto Porter Jr. (Morley, Mo./ Scott County Central) 17 points and No. 5 Georgetown cut an eight-point deficit to four in the waning minutes, but could not get closer as Villanova beat the Hoyas, ending their 11-game win streak, 67-55, at Wells Fargo Center Wednesday night.
The Hoyas fall to 23-5 overall and 13-4 in the BIG EAST, while Villanova improves to 19-12 overall and 10-8 in league play.
Porter Jr. reached double figures in scoring for the 15th-straight game to lead the Hoyas, hitting 6-of-13 shots from the floor, to lead three players in double figures. Junior guard Markel Starks (Accokeek, Md. / Georgetown Prep) scored 12 points and freshman guard D'Vauntes Smith-Rivera (Indianapolis, Ind./Oak Hill)added 14 points. Junior forward Nate Lubick (Southborough, Mass. / St. Mark's) scored five points and had eight rebounds before fouling out.
Georgetown trailed by four points at the break, but a three-pointer from sophomore guard Jabril Trawick (Philadelphia, Pa./Abington Friends) cut the Wildcat lead to 33-32. Villanova responded with six-straight points and took a 39-32 lead on a JayVaughn Pinkston layup, but a three-pointer and one of two free throws from Porter Jr. made it 39-36. The Wildcats responded with five-straight points and took a 44-36 lead on a Pinkston three-pointer with 14:22 to play.
Trailing by eight point, the Hoyas used a 7-0 run, started by a Smith-Rivera three and capped on consecutive jumpers form Porter Jr. to pull within 44-43 with 11:04 to play in the game. A three-pointer from Porter Jr. cut the lead to 48-46 and a jumper from Lubick made it 51-48 with 7:12 left, but Darrun Hilliard responded with a three to push the lead back to six points.
Baskets from Starks cut the lead to four points, 56-52, with 2:50 left, but the Wildcats hit 11-of-12 free throws in the final minutes to seal the win.
The Hoyas took a 7-0 lead in the opening minutes, with free throws from Porter Jr. capping the run. Villanova, however, responded with a 10-2 run over 5:35 and took a 10-9 lead on a three-pointer from James Bell at the 12:02 mark.
A layup from Starks gave the Hoyas an 11-10 lead, but a 9-1 spurt over 2:30 gave Villanova a 19-12 lead on a layup from Tony Chennault with 8:39 to play. A layup from JayVaughn Pinkston pushed the Wildcats lead to eight points, 22-14, but Georgetown responded with an 11-3 spurt over a span of 3:29 and tied the game at 25-all on a jumper from Smith-Rivera at the 1:58 mark. Smith-Rivera, who scored eight points in the half, tied the game at 27-all with a layup but Villanova took a 33-29 lead at the break after a three-pointer from Arcidiacono.
Georgetown closes out the regular season on Saturday, March 9, hosting long-time BIG EAST Conference rival Syracuse for the final meeting as conference members. Tipoff at Verizon Center is slated for noon. The game will be shown live on ESPN, with Sean McDonough, Jay Bilas and Bill Raftery calling all of the action. The radio call of Rich Chvotkin can be heard locally on ESPN 980 AM.
