Looks like THE RIVALRY will continue

September 13, 2013 - The Hoya Nation has been embroiled in an internal argument the last day or so, one that has taken heated proportions; the question whether to schedule Syracuse has raged.

Maybe the correct term would be 're-schedule', as the Orange are no longer BIG EAST members, ending a 63 year relationship with Georgetown (BIG EAST play beginning in 1980), instead joining the Atlantic Coast Conference effective this season. Hence the divide - fans are torn as to benefit from an ongoing relationship with Syracuse, or deny the Orange any advantage because of their perceived betrayal.

Well, it looks like THE RIVALRY will continue. Yesterday Georgetown's head coach, John Thompson III said in a statement "...the details with Syracuse will be finalized. This is a series that will happen".

His boss, Athletic Director Lee Reed was a bit more nuanced, also noting through statement "We have had some conversations with their administration about continuing the series over the course of the last year, but nothing has been finalized". Nevertheless it's clear there is major interest playing Syracuse going forward, as Reed continued "I am confident, however, that we will continue to play them in the near future."

From Syracuse's perspective, Lee's counterpart there Daryl Gross recently acknowledged to that city's Post-Standard "I know Lee really wants to do it,", then said "It's obviously a great rivalry. Those are games that should be played. They just need to figure out their scheduling and their conference".

Proposed parameters include a 10 year home and home setup. Both sides apparently have indicated playing in New York City is a viable option.

From G'Town's perspective, advantages of continuing this almost blood feud including of course money - can someone say instant sellout - but continuing to keep it's brand front and center nationally. Add preparation for BIG EAST play and NCAA Tournament selection positioning as pros, the latter brought about by a BIG EAST now absent several national championship caliber (Louisville, Syracuse) and profile (Notre Dame, Pitt) programs.
