WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University men's basketball team is back in action on Monday, Dec. 10, hosting Longwood at Verizon Center. Tipoff for the game is slated for 7 p.m.
The game will be shown live on MASN, with Jason Knapp and Mark Tillmon calling all of the action. Locally, fans can tune into the radio call of Rich Chvotkin, in his 39th year calling Hoyas games, on ESPN 980 AM.
The Hoyas won their fourth-straight game and improved to 7-1 overall with a 46-40 win over Towson on Saturday. The Blue & Gray are ranked No. 15 in the latest Associated Press Top 25 poll and No. 23 in the USA Today Coaches poll.
The meeting with Longwood on Monday will be the first ever between the Hoyas and the Lancers, who are a member of the Big South Conference. Georgetown has an all-time record of 12-0 against teams from the Big South. The last meeting was an 87-72 win over UNC-Asheville during the 2010-11 season.
In Saturday's win over Towson, four players scored in double figures as the Hoyas limited the Tigers to only 32.6 percent shooting from the field and held an opponent to fewer than 42 points for the third-straight game. Georgetown ranks third in the BIG EAST, and 14th nationally, in scoring defense, allowing only 54.1 points per game. That figure is the lowest number in nine years under Head Coach John Thompson III.
The 40 points scored by Towson marked the first time since the 1983-84 season that Georgetown has limited three-straight opponents to 42 points or fewer. Only two of Georgetown's eight opponents this season have scored more than 60 points.
Sophomore forward Otto Porter Jr. (Morley, Mo./ Scott County Central) leads the team in scoring with 11.7 points per game and is second on the team in rebounds, grabbing 7.3 per game, which ranks 10th in the BIG EAST. Porter Jr. also ranks eighth in the BIG EAST in steals per game (2.14 spg) and tied for seventh in the league in blocks per game (1.71 bpg).
Two other players are scoring in double figures for the Hoyas, with sophomore forward Greg Whittington (Columbia, Md./ Oakland Mills) averaging 11.5 points per game and junior guard Markel Starks (Accokeek, Md. / Georgetown Prep) adding 11.1 points per game. Whittington leads the team, and ranks fifth in the BIG EAST, with 8.0 rebounds per game.
Junior center Mikael Hopkins (Hyattsville, Md./ DeMatha), who has reached double figures in scoring five times this season, is fourth on the team in scoring with 9.4 points per game and is fourth on the team with 3.5 rebounds.
Junior forward Nate Lubick (Southborough, Mass. / St. Mark's) is fifth on the team in scoring with 8.3 points per game, third in rebounds with 4.9 per game and leads the team with 3.0 assists per game. In the last two games, he is averaging 11.5 points, 4.5 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game. He leads the BIG EAST in field goal percentage, connecting on 62.5 percent of his field goals (25-of-40).
The Hoyas rank eighth in the BIG EAST in field goal percentage, connecting on 45.0 percent of their shots. Georgetown is third in the BIG EAST in scoring defense (54.1 ppg) and ranks third in field goal percentage defense (36.9 percent) and seventh in three-point field goal percentage (30.6 percent).
