WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University men's basketball team will be back in action for the first time in two weeks, traveling on Friday afternoon for its BIG EAST Conference opener on Saturday, Jan. 5 at Marquette.
The game tips off at the Bradley Center in downtown Milwaukee at 2 p.m. (ET), with Lou Canellis handling the play-by-play and Bob Valvano serving as the color analyst. Fans locally can tune to Sports Talk AM 570 for the radio call of Rich Chvotkin.
The Hoyas enter the weekend with a 10-1 overall record and a seven-game win streak. GU is ranked No. 15 in the latest Associated Press poll and No. 16 in the USA Today Coaches poll.
Georgetown extended its win streak to seven games with a 65-48 win over American on Saturday, Dec. 22, its last non-league game before starting league play this weekend.
The meeting with Marquette will be the 14th all-time between the schools, with Georgetown leading the head-to-head series, 7-6. The Hoyas have won three of the last four meetings between the schools, but the Golden Eagles have won the last three games at Bradley Center. Georgetown's last win in Milwaukee was a 72-70 decision during the 2007-08 season.
The Hoyas are led by sophomore forward Otto Porter Jr. (Morley, Mo./ Scott County Central), who recorded his third double-double of the season, and the sixth of his career, with 16 points and a season-high 13 rebounds in the win over American. Porter leads the team in scoring with 13.2 points per game and is among the top-15 in the BIG EAST in rebounding (7.7 rpg, fifth), field goal percentage (51.0%, 14th), steals (2.2 spg, fourth), blocked shots (1.4, 12th) and assist/turnover ratio (2.7, sixth).
Sophomore forward Greg Whittington (Columbia, Md./ Oakland Mills), who scored a career-high 25 points in an 81-68 win over Western Carolina on Dec. 15, is second on the team in scoring (12.5 ppg) and rebounding (7.4 rpg). Whittington, who is eighth in the BIG EAST in rebounds, ranks seventh in the BIG EAST in minutes played, leading the Hoyas with 35.3 per game.
Combined, Porter Jr. and Whittington are averaging 24.5 points, 14.4 rebounds and 5.5 assists while shooting 42.8 percent from the floor (106-of-220).
The Georgetown starting lineup - Porter, Whittington, junior guard Markel Starks (Accokeek, Md./Georgetown Prep), Sophomore center Mikael Hopkins (Hyattsville, Md./ DeMatha) and junior forward Nate Lubick (Southborough, Mass. / St. Mark's) - has accounted for 78.0 percent of the team's scoring this season (571 of 733 points).
Starks has scored in double figures six times this season and is third on the team in scoring with 11.1 points per game. He ranks sixth in the BIG EAST in three-point field goal percentage, connecting on 44.1 percent of his shots. Hopkins is fourth on the team in scoring with 8.4 points per game and fourth with 3.0 rebounds. He handed out a career-high five assists in the win over American and in the last two games is averaging 6.5 points, 2.5 rebounds and 4.5 assists. Lubick is averaging 7.5 points, 5.1 rebounds and is second on the team with 3.2 assists per game. He has connected on 59.6 percent of his field goals (31-of-52).
The Hoyas have been led by a stingy defensive effort this season, holding opponents to under 60 points in eight of its 11 games. GU's opponents are averaging a paltry 54.7 points per game, which ranks second in the BIG EAST and No. 9 nationally. It is the lowest opponent scoring average in Head Coach John Thompson III's tenure at GU. The Hoyas have limited opponents to 37.5 percent shooting from the field, which is third in the conference.
