Hoyas needed more than Harris and Rice

Sometimes guys get en fuego and take over games. Such was the case for Dante Harris this evening, contributing 17 points and team high six assists. Unfortunately it wasn't enough, as his Georgetown Hoyas fell to St. Joseph's 77-74 in the Paycom Wooden Legacy's consolation game.

Six of the sophomore point guard's points came in 1st stanza action. A second half flourish indicates his primacy to Georgetown's effort: Harris logged seven points, one rebound, two assists and a steal over five minutes and 40 seconds, erasing a five point SJU lead and helping push the Hoyas up one with slightly over eight minutes in regulation.

That score advantage would be Georgetown's last, as the Hawks' senior forward, Taylor Funk (game best 29 points on 9-11 shooting, including sinking 8-10 from long distance and a team high seven rebounds) immediately rattled off six of his team's seven points, placing the Hawks up seven.

"We told the guys before the game, he's just like our Kaiden Rice" said Ewing off Funk. "He can shoot, he can make shots, he can make deep shots...We had to do a better job of closing out to him".

Speaking of Rice, he paced the Hoyas with 25 points, 19 during second stanza play. The grad school transfer shot 9-15 from the field, 7-13 on three pointers. Said Ewing of Rice's torrid shooting that has started to be a Blue and Grey staple "We just have to give him the opportunity. We gave him the opportunity tonight, and he was able to knock them down".

Ewing, who lamented his team's 14 turnovers, saw it shoot 43.5% overall, 44% beyond the arc over 40 minutes, significant increases over their 30.3%/23.8% first half marks.

Speaking of the initial stanza, Ewing's guys fell behind 13 points twice to Billy Lange's SJU side. The Hawks finished with 45.9% shooting from the field, 34.4% on long balls. Grad center Ejike Obinna joined Funk in double figure scoring with 17 points, joined by sophomore wing Jordan Hall's 13.

The Hoyas got 13 points from grad guard Don Carey. Junior center Timothy Igohefe pulled down a game and career best 14 rebounds.

SJU ( 3-3), next welcomes Binghamton to it's Philly-based Hagan Arena, next Wednesday, December 1st. Tip-off is 7p EST.

Georgetown (2-3) heads back home to DC's Capital One Arena for an upcoming Tuesday contest with Longwood. Start time is 7p.

Despite going 0-2 in Wooden Legacy action, Ewing views the experience though the lens of growth.

"I'm looking at this as teaching lessons for them...If we don't grow from this trip before we get back home, then the trip would have been a waste" shared the head Hoya. "We have a very young team, and they have to learn. This is the only way they are going to learn".
