WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University men's basketball team is back in action on Monday, Nov. 19, playing No. 13 UCLA in a championship round game of the Legends Classic at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y. Tip-off is slated for 8 p.m.
The game will be shown live on ESPN2, with Dan Shulman and Dick Vitale calling all of the action, and Andy Katz handling the sidelines. Locally, fans can tune in for the radio call of Rich Chvotkin on ESPN 980 AM.
The Hoyas played their season opener last Sunday, beating Duquesne, 61-55, in the first game of the Washington round of the Legends Classic. GU beat Liberty, 68-59, in the second regional round game of the Legends Classic on Wednesday, Nov. 14, with four players scoring in double figures.
Against Duquesne, freshman guard D'Vauntes Smith-Rivera (Indianapolis, Ind./Oak Hill) scored a game-high 19 points, while sophomore forward Greg Whittington (Columbia, Md./Oakland Mills) added eight points and a career-high 15 rebounds and sophomore center Mikael Hopkins (Hyattsville, Md./DeMatha) scored a career-high 13 points and added four rebounds.
Smith-Rivera, who scored 11 points in the win over Liberty, leads the team in scoring with 15.0 points per game, connecting on 64.3 percent of his field goals (9-of-14) and 71.4 percent of his three-point field goals (5-of-7). Smith-Rivera, who hit 6-of-7 shots from the floor and all four of his three-point field goal attempts against Duquesne, had as impressive a debut as any recent Georgetown freshman. His 19 points were the most for a freshman in their first game on campus since Mike Sweetney scored 19 points against Bethune-Cookman during the 2000-01 season. Allen Iverson also scored 19 points in his first game at Georgetown.
Whittington followed the performance in the season opener with a career-high 18 points against Liberty, collecting nine rebounds in the process. He is second on the team in scoring with 13.0 points per game and leads the team with 12.0 rebounds. Whittington's 15 rebounds in the game against Duquesne matched the individual season-high from the 2011-12 season, first set by forward Otto Porter Jr. (Morley, Mo./Scott County Central) with 15 in a win at DePaul and then by Henry Sims, who had 15 against Cincinnati in the BIG EAST Tournament.
Hopkins is third on the team in scoring with 13.0 points per game and is third with 4.5 rebounds per game. He matched his career-high with 13 points against Liberty.
Junior forward Nate Lubick(Southborough, Mass./St. Marks), who has started the last 48 games on the Hilltop, scored a career-high 13 points in the win over Liberty. He is fourth on the team in scoring with 10.0 points per game and is second with 7.5 rebounds.
Porter, Jr., a Preseason All-BIG EAST First Team selection and Associated Press honorable mention All-American selection, played only six minutes against Duquesne after getting hit in the head during the first half and did not return. He was diagnosed with symptoms indicating a mild concussion and did not play against Liberty. Head Coach John Thompson III said that Porter was expected to practice on Friday and should play on Monday.
The game against UCLA will be only the third meeting all-time between two storied programs in college basketball history. The Bruins lead the head-to-head series 2-0.
Georgetown will play either Georgia or No. 1 Indiana on Tuesday, Nov. 20 (7:30 or 10 p.m.).
