Game Report: Coppin State at Georgetown

Following is Georgetown's official game report, documenting it's ??? overtime win over Coppin State last night.

Spears’ 28 Leads Five in Double Figures as Hoyas Defeat Coppin State 99-89 in Overtime


WASHINGTON – Primo Spears tallied 28 points to lead all scorers as the Georgetown men’s basketball team defeated the visiting Coppin State University Eagles 99-89 in overtime on Tuesday night at Capital One Arena. Spears led a quintet of Hoyas in double figures as the Blue & Gray start the season at 1-0. Coppin State fell to 0-2 to start the season.

HOYA HIGHLIGHTS

● Primo Spears led five Hoyas in double figures with 28 points on 10-of-19 shooting and 7-of-9 from the line. The Hoya guard also tallied six rebounds and four assists on the night.

● Bryson Mozone added 20 points for GU, going 7-for-14 (50.0%) from the floor and pulling down seven boards.

Akok Akok registered his first career double-double with 18 points and 12 rebounds, going 7-of-9 from the floor and adding five blocks.

Qudus Wahab recorded his 10th career double-double, posting 11 points and 10 boards.

Brandon Murray rounded out those in double figures with 18 points, a team-high eight assists and six boards.

● The Hoyas outscored CSU in the paint (40-29) and in second-chance points (29-20) as well outrebounding the Eagles (51-36).

● Georgetown shot 47.9% from the floor, including 6-of-9 (66.7%) in the extra period.


HOW IT HAPPENED

● Akok opened the game with a deep two from the corner before Wahab finished off a three-point play to put the Hoyas up 5-0.

● After exchanging baskets, Coppin State scored seven unanswered before a Murray triple ended the Eagle run and put GU ahead by two (13-11) at the 13:44 mark.

● Murray scored seven-straight points at the midway point of the first before Akok slammed home a dunk and pushed the Georgetown edge to 24-19.

● Both teams exchanged blows over the next several minutes until GU went on a 6-0 run to take a 36-29 lead. Coppin State closed the half on a 5-0 run of its own with the Blue & Gray ahead 36-34 at the break.

● The Hoyas and the Eagles continued to battle back and forth through the first four minutes of the second half with CSU taking a 43-42 lead at the 16:44 mark.

● Coppin State extended its lead to as many as seven at the halfway mark but the Hoyas did not back down, going on a 6-0 run of their own and pulling within one (61-60) at 7:07.

● With 5:28 on the clock, Spears turned on the jets, scoring 15 of the team’s last 17 points of regulation before CSU hit a game-tying trey at the buzzer to send the game to overtime (83-83).

● Spears hit a jumper to open the extra period (85-83). After a pair of free throws by Coppin State, Mozone went on a personal 4-0 run before Spears finger-rolled a layup and put the Hoyas ahead 91-85.

● Georgetown pulled away in the final two minutes, fueled by triples from Akok and Mozone and a Spears jumper to take a 99-89 victory.
