BROOKLYN, N.Y. - The young Georgetown Hoyas battled back and forth with the No. 1-ranked team in the country on Tuesday night in the championship game of the Legends Classic, out-scored the Hoosiers 8-1 over the final 1;18 to force overtime on a layup from sophomore forward Otto Porter (Morley, Mo./Scott County Central), but fell short in overtime in an 82-72 loss at the Barclays Center. The loss is the first of the season for the Hoyas, who are now 3-1.
Sophomore guard Markel Starks (Accokeek, Md./Georgetown Prep) scored a team-high 20 points before fouling out, while Porter added 15 points, five rebounds, four assists, two blocks and two steals, sophomore forward Greg Whittington(Columbia, Md./Oakland Mills) picked up 12 points and had six rebounds, while sophomore center Mikael Hopkins (Hyattsville, Md./DeMatha) chipped in with 11 points and four rebounds before fouling out.
Trailing 63-56 with 1;08 to play, three-pointers from Starks and Porter cut the lead to 63-62 with 31 seconds left. After one of two free throws from Indiana's Yogi Ferrell, Georgetown had the ball with 24 seconds. Following a timeout, Porter drove to the basket and hit his pull-up to tie the game and a flailing attempt from IU's Jordan Hulls was off the mark at the buzzer.
In the overtime period, IU scored the first six points to take a 70-64 lead and Starks free throws cut the lead to four points. The Hoosiers then hit 5-of-6 free throws and a three-pointer from Kevin Ferrell made it 78-68 with 59 seconds left. Georgetown hit all eight of its free throws attempts in the overtime, but did not connect on a field goal and fell short in the extra five minutes.
Trailing by four points at the half, 36-32, IU pushed the lead to five points, 44-39, on a three-pointer from Christian Watford at 15:34. The Hoyas, however, went on an 8-0 run and opened a 47-44 lead on a driving layup from sophomore guard Jabril Trawick (Philadelphia, Pa./Abington Friends) with 11:24 left. Trawick hit another driving layup with 10:31 to play, making it 49-45.
The Hoosiers took the lead back on consecutive three-points from Remy Abell and Jordan Hulls and that triggered an 18-7 run over 9:43, taking a 63-56 lead on free throws from Cody Zeller before Porter the Hoyas finished regulation in dramatic fashion.
The first half was a back-and-forth battle befitting a pair of heavyweights. There were four ties and nine lead changes.
