Is get back on the Blue and Grey's collective mind?
"We owe these guys. They're a good team, we're not looking past that" said senior center Joshua Smith, yesterday at a pre game press conference. " It's one of those where last year didn't go as we wanted to. We just have to redeem ourselves".
Junior guard D'Vauntes Smith-Rivera echoed those sentiments, noting "we know it's the next game on hand for us", yet acknowledging "It's definitely revenge" on their minds.
Kansas comes into tonight's game ranked 10th in the country. Junior Perry Ellis leads the Jayhawks in scoring at 14.6 ppg. The forward also paces his squad with 6.7 caroms each time out.
Fresh off a dominant, come from behind home victory over Florida, Kansas, coached by Bill Self is 6-1 on the season, having won five straight.
Georgetown (5-2) bounced back from a 1-2, Battle 4 Atlantis Tournament outing to defeat Towson on Sunday. Smith-Rivera is the team's top scorer, pouring in 14.4 points per game, followed by Smith at 12.7 ppg.
For more on the match up, including Head Hoya John Thompson III's take on Ellis, Kansas' work screening and with ball reversals to Wayne Sheldon, limiting transition opportunities and other challenges KU poses, possibly spreading the Jayhawk's man-to-man defense and even the coach possibly querying his freshman forward Paul White about KU's frosh sensation Cliff Alexander (the pair are from Chicago), visit Premium Court.
Speaking of Thompson, what was his view of last year's Kansas debacle.
"As much last year that I can remember, we weren't in it" he said, "offensively, defensively, for whatever the reasons the stars were not aligned properly last year. It was a difficult evening. A very, very difficult evening.
"So the guys that were here remember that, and if they've forgotten we've watched enough tape to remind them of that".
When asked if he buys into the revenge angle, if such an emotion is helpful, Thompson paused, then with a coach's motivational twinkle in his eye stated: "I don't know. The TV people said they (his players) said that. The words come out of our mouth, will the actions come out on the court? It depends. Are you going to get that loose ball that we need to get? Are you going to remember to box out the guys we need to box out? Are you going to keep your body in front of your man? Or are we going to just sit over here today and talk about it?
"We'll see".
