Hoyas Fall to South Carolina in Overtime

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown men’s basketball team fell to South Carolina 74-71 in overtime at Capital One Arena on Saturday afternoon. A trio of Hoyas scored in double figures on the day. With the setback, Georgetown moves to 4-5 on the season while South Carolina moves to 4-4.

ON THE RECORD

“I thought we started the game out flat, that's why I called an early time out. [In the] second half we started flat again, that's why I called another time out at the beginning of the second half. We didn’t execute well enough offensively. GG had no points at half time and he ended up with 22 … At the end of overtime when they got that three we couldn’t come up with a rebound. In those times of the game that's when we’ve got to be able to buckle down and get a stop. We got the stop but we couldn’t come up with the rebound."

- Head Coach Patrick Ewing

HOYA HIGHLIGHTS

● Heath led all scorers with 23 points on 7-of-14 (50.0%) shooting and a perfect 6-of-6 from the free throw line.

● Spears tallied 18 points on 8-of-18 shooting and was active on both sides of the ball with three assists and three steals.

● Murray had 13 points on 5-of-14 shooting and also had five assists, three steals and drew six fouls

● Qudus Wahab had nine rebounds leading GU on the glass and also tallied a pair of steals.

● Georgetown shot 43.1% (28-65) for the game but allowed 45.2% (28-62) shooting from the Gamecocks.

● South Carolina outrebounded the Hoyas 39-36 but the Blue & Gray forced 16 turnovers while committing just nine. The Hoyas were able to convert those turnovers to 23 paints.

HOW IT HAPPENED

● Jay Heath got the Hoyas on the board first knocking down a pair of free throws two minutes in. After trading buckets, Heath knocked down a triple to knot the game at 10 (13:43), sparking a 13-2 run for the Hoyas.

● Despite South Carolina trimming the lead to four (21-17; 8:13), Spears’ back-to-back buckets pushed GU’s lead back to eight. 25-17.

● The Gamecocks continued to chip away, cutting the lead to as little as five (29-24; 4:23) but GU’s defense held South Carolina to just two points on a pair of free throws through the remainder of the frame. GU went into the locker room with the 37-26 advantage.

● SC came out of the gates hot in the second half and cut the lead to five (39-34) before an 8-2 Hoya run, bookended by an Akok Akok putback and alleyoop, pushed the lead back to 11 (47-36; 15:42), forcing the Gamecocks to call a timeout.

● South Carolina would not go away in the second half as Gregory “GG” Jackson poured in all of his 22 points in the second stanza and took a 64-61 lead with 2:26 to play before a Murray layup through traffic pulled the Blue & Gray within one (64-63).

● With less than five seconds left in regulation, a Spears bucket pushed the Hoyas ahead one but a late free throw would knot things up at 65 as the horn blew, forcing overtime.

● The Gamecocks would never trail in the extra frame and with the game knotted at 71, South Carolina knocked down a second-chance dagger for the 74-71 overtime victory.
