Cooper bounces early
November 11, 2013 - Per a Georgetown press release today, freshman forward Shayla Cooper has quit the team and decided to transfer. The 6'2" player had averaged 16 points, 8.5 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 32.5 minutes over two games.
She did not play in the last contest, a 67-52 home loss to California, Saturday. It had been reported Sunday Cooper was suspended, an erroneous announcement, as her intention at that time was to transfer.
Head coach Jim Lewis said of the Norcross, GA native "She's an outstanding student and athlete and she has a very bright future". He went on to wish her well and issue a thanks for Cooper's tenure on The Hilltop.
While at G'Town, Cooper seemed to be a team leader, one that interacted well with teammates during the school's Basketball Tip-Off. She was also identified by a curious play; during the team's season opening 82-78 defeat of Richmond, Shayla threw a shoe at an opponents shot.
It is unknown what spurred Cooper's decision to transfer so early in her collegiate career. It's also unclear if the resignation this fall of Keith Brown, who recruited her, played a role in her choice.
