According to its website NABC.org, the organization was started in 1927, and tasked itself with furthering "the best interests of the game of basketball as well as the players and coaches who participate in the sport".
A quartet of subjects, dubbed "four core values" consisting of "advocacy, leadership, service and education" help guide this, including the organization's Guardians of the Game initiative, which "focuses attention on the positive roles coaches play in the lives of today's student-athletes, the game of basketball and the community.
These core values and related NABC's efforts are not all attention gathering or branding, as according to it's the organization, "Each core value provides coaches with a platform to effect positive changes within the game, among student-athletes and their communities".
Thompson was elected a board member today of the largest professional grouping of men's basketball coaches, a number close to 5,000, ranging from the NCAA to high school levels. He joins 20 others on the Board of Directors, consisting of six officers and 15 board members.
NABC programs/efforts include Coaches vs. Cancer - which has raised 70 million-plus dollars, early season tournaments, postseason All-Star games, the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame, and others, including a partnership with the NCAA to produce each year's Division I championship trophy.
Thompson is the only BIG EAST coach on the NABC's board.
