Hoya NBA summer league rundown
June 12, 2013 - With the National Basketball Association's two summer leagues - based in Orlando and Las Vegas - now afoot, players from around the globe are competing with the dream of playing in the 'L'. Most NBA players at one time or another play in these summertime events.
Of course Georgetown guys are suiting up. At present count, six will participate in the Vegas sessions, which begin today: Chris Wright and Hollis Thompson (Spurs), DaJuan Summers (Clippers), Henry Sims and Patrick Ewing, Jr. (Bobcats).
First round draft pick Otto Porter, Jr. will also play, suiting up for the Washington Wizard's team. He was the 2013 NBA Draft's third pick overall.
Last season Thompson and Sims played in the NBA Developmental League (Tulsa 66'ers, Erie Bayhawks respectively), joined by Summers (Maine Red Claws) and Wright (Iowa Energy); the former also made the Clippers' 15-man regular season roster and latter saw time with the NBA's Dallas Mavericks. Ewing competed last season in Spain, playing for Blancos deRueda Valladolid.
This week Wright also did work in the soon-to-end Orlando event, averaging 10.5 points and 2.3 assists per game for the Brooklyn Nets' entry. Wright, who has demonstrated a more proficient shot and confidence running a team in a NBA-style setting in summer action, shot 44.4% from the field and grabbed 1.5 caroms as well, in 20 minutes each time out.
His best outing, scoring wise, was the Nets' loss to Utah, in which Wright dropped 20 points, while adding a pair of assists.
