No problem with Horns

December 4, 2012 - Georgetown's Hoyas twice enjoyed a 17 point first half lead, before finishing Texas 64-41 in the first game of Dickie V Classic play tonight in New York's Madison Square Garden. G'Town improved to 6-1 on the season, Texas is now 5-3.

The Hoyas dominated shooting percentage (41% to 29.2%), while out-rebounding UT, well regarded on the boards, 41-35. Texas never led, and their flex offense never materialized as a factor - a question broached by HoyaReport.com before the game.

Sophomore forward Otto Porter led the Hoyas in both scoring (14 points) and rebounding (eight). Junior forward Nate Lubick followed in scoring with 13 points, plus added four caroms. His classmate, guard Markel Starks was close behind dropping 11 points, and also accounted for three rebounds, four dimes and three steals.

Texas got 11 points and five rebounds from freshman center Cameron Ridley, while sophomore guard Sheldon McClellan paced the Longhorns in scoring with 12 points.

Afterward Head Hoya John Thompson III expressed some satisfaction with his team's defensive performance, saying "We're getting better" and the the defense is "getting to be where it's pretty good".

In typical coaching fashion, he soon thereafter noted the Hoyas have "a lot to do" in terms of overall development.

They get another chance to improve Saturday, hosting Towson at noon. Based on today's clip of 3-11 (22.2%) for the game, G'Town's three point shooting could be under the spotlight then.

Texas, currently without point guard Myck Kabongo, hosts UCLA that same day, giving the team an opportunity to move past this ugly loss.
