August 16, 2012The BIG EAST has been besieged during the last year, with school defections such as Syracuse and Pitt rocking the conference, and many believing the league is poised to take a financial hit during upcoming TV negotiations. Fueling many of these concerns is the perceived loss of stature brought about by the conference's football situation.
To its credit, the BIG EAST has added numerous schools to bolster it's footprint, including Temple and Memphis, but even that has been rocky. See TCU's acceptance than rejection of conference membership.
The league even lost its commissioner, twice in the last three years - Mike Tranghese, after 19 years, gave way to John Marianatto, who ceded the reigns on an interim basis to Joe Bailey, III this year.
Talk about rocky seas.
Into the leadership breach stepped long time TV executive Mike Aresco, a couple of days ago.
Aresco recently talked to Yahoo Sports Radio, discussing his background, his agenda, the need to promote the league, basketball only schools relationship with those that play both roundball and football.
