May 7, 2012May 7, 2012 - According to a media report, John Marinatto has resigned as BIG EAST commissioner. His tenure as league head honcho began in 2009, and ended, per the report, as a result of conference president's asking for his resignation.
In the interim, Joseph Bailey III has been named commissioner - he has been CEO of the NFL's Miami Dolphins and presently works with an executive recruiting firm. According to the report, Marianatto's long term replacement will be drawn from a short list of executives, including those presently in the BIG EAST, SEC, Pac-12 and the sports industry.

While commissioner, Syracuse, Pitt and West Virginia bolted the conference for the ACC in the first two case, Big 12 in WVU's. TCU, which pledged fealty to the BIG EAST but never competed in it, will also join West Virginia.
Eight schools were brought in by Marianatto - Houston, Temple, SMU, Houston, UCF, Boise State, Navy and San Diego State - though their entrances are staggered and several (Navy, Boise State and San Diego State), will compete only in football.
